Job Description
The American Veterans Disabled for Life Memorial was dedicated October 5, 2014.
“To honor veterans who became disabled while serving in the Armed Forces of the United States.” It is located on a 2.4-acre triangle between Washington Avenue SW, C Street SW and Second Street SW; directly over the I-395 tunnel in Washington D.C. and within full view of the United States Capitol. The monument is comprised of three components – the Reflecting Pool with Eternal Flame, Glass Wall “Voices of the Veterans” stories from the wounded inscribed on the translucent glass panels, polished granite Wall of Gratitude with quotes from past Presidents expressing their thanks for the wounded soldiers’ service. Portions of each of the monument components are supported directly by the existing tunnel structures. Helical piles are used to support the sections of the monument, spanning between the tunnel supports, to minimize any differential settlement between sections. A total of Sixty-five (65) 2” rounded square shaft helical piles support sections of each component. Piles were extended to firm bearing soil beneath the tunnel structures and have an allowable capacity of 65,000lbs. Helical piles were used due to weight restrictions imposed on the project due to the tunnel structures.
